Digital technology renders mechanical systems obsolete, and dashboards are no exception. It is cheaper and quicker to produce an electronic dashboard than the old mechanical style dashboard.
Electronic dashboards are also easier to install as they do away with the necessity of planning a route for the speedo cable from the gearbox to the dashboard.
However, the digital system has problems of it's own. The data on the dashboard is stored on an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), and this data can be corrupted by a change in the electrical pulses in your vehicle. If for example your car had to be jump-started due to a discharged battery, the resulting possible corruption of the EEPROM would mean that the electronic display on your dashboard is now incorrect.
If for any reason you needed to replace your existing dashboard (e.g. due to vandalism) the mileage display on your replacement dashboard will not correspond with the mileage of your vehicle. This could make selling your car very difficult.
